Man accused of raping niece remanded

A SUSPECT in an alleged rape case that occurred on Christmas Day in Porebada village, outside Port Moresby, has been remanded in custody and his case adjourned to Jan 28.
Central Committal Court Magistrate Alex Kalandi adjourned the case to allow police prosecutor Snr Const George Vetari to make necessary amendments to the charges against the accused before it was read to him.The accused, 21, from Boera village in Hiri, allegedly raped his five-year-old niece when he went to celebrate Christmas with his sister and her husband at Porebada.
It was alleged that between 4am and 4.30am, a fight broke out between the accused and his brother-in-law while they were celebrating so he left the party and went to his sister’s house. He saw the victim crying to go to her parents and said he would take her to them but instead took her to the mangroves, raped her and left her there.
The victim was found by two women and taken back to her house where she told her parents what happened.
The accused was arrested and charged.
