A MAN, who allegedly sewed the genitals of his sister-in-law and locked it with a padlock, was arrested by Lae police on Wednesday.
The 39-year-old from Bau village in Huon Gulf, Morobe, was picked up by police at the 3-Mile settlement in Lae after a community leader reported him to police.
The man had been allegedly threatening, raping, and sexually defiling the woman, said to be the wife of his brother.
The woman’s husband is reportedly in Port Moresby.
Lae Met Supt Anthony Wagambie Jr said police arrested the man following an alarm raised by a community leader at 3-Mile where the man was assaulting the woman.
Wagambie said the victim and her children had fled from their family home at 9-Mile to 3-Mile after she was continuously abused by the man.
Wagambie said the victim, a nurse, had suffered the abuses at the hands of the man for a while.
“A member of our police foot-beat unit received a phone call from a community leader that a man was threatening a woman at a house, wanting her to go with him back to 9-Mile,” Wagambie said.
“Police went to the location, surrounded it and arrested the man.”
“They found a Rambo-type knife on him.”
Wagambie said both the man and complainant were taken to the 3-Mile Police Station for processing.
He said at the police station the policewoman on duty noticed that the victim was “distressed and in pain,” he said.
“The policewoman took the woman aside and asked her if there was anything else, apart from the threat, that she wanted to tell her.
“That is when the woman revealed to the policewoman the ordeal she has been going through.
“The man, whom the family trusted, as he is a relative of the husband, had gone on to forcefully move into the family home.
“He had threatened the woman and raped her on many occasions in her own home.
“He had used homemade guns and weapons to threaten to kill her (if she tells anyone).
“What is really inhumane is that the culprit had gone on to sew her genital and have it locked up with a small padlock for which he has the key.
“This is a very sick-minded individual, who is worse than an animal.
“What saddens me is that the woman lived under fear all this time.
“She is a nursing officer, who is well aware of family sexual violence issues, but lived with this abuse herself.”
Wagambie said the suspect had gone to her workplace and at her nursing accommodation where she had moved into and threatened to kill her if she did not return to 9-Mile.
Wagambie said the same man was picked up by police mid last year for an alleged armed robbery on a PMV bus at 9-Mile but was released due to insufficient evidence.
“Police detectives are checking his background.
“He seems to be a very dangerous and aggressive person,” he said.
