A MAN from Harua in Yangoru-Saussia is to appear in court today accused of being in possession of a gun and for cultivating marijuana.
East Sepik police commander Supt Albert Beli told The National that the man was charged last week and was in custody at the Wewak Police Station.
He said the firearm was believed to be a police-issued.
Supt Beli said the man was arrested by Tangori police under the command of First Const Moses Pilai last Sunday when they raided Harua village in Kubilia and uprooted marijuana plants that weighed about 20kgs.
He said when they searched his house, they allegedly found that he had a firearm.
“Marijuana is now cultivated throughout the country because of the change in the weather pattern,” Supt Beli said.
“This had seen people growing the drug.
“I will organise an operation to arrest people who are cultivating marijuana in the province because there are many youths who consume it and are now seen walking on the streets mentally affected.”
Supt Beli was pleased with the Tangori policemen and urged other police station commanders to do likewise.
