A MAN charged by police with arson for allegedly burning down a school science laboratory is awaiting his court appearance in East New Britain.
The lab at the Utmei Secondary School was burnt last Friday, provincial police commander Chief Insp Joseph Tabali says.
He said the 25-year-old man had gone to the school between 2am and 3am and burnt down the science laboratory.
“The fire spread quickly and made it very hard for the students, security guards and the teachers to put out the fire or go into the building and save the properties inside,” he said.
“They have no choice but to watch the building go down in flames.
“They only manage to save the two buildings next to the science lab.”
Tabali said the same man had on Nov 11 tried to burn down another building but was spotted by security guards who put out the fire.
He had been allegedly involved in burning properties in the village.
“If the community leaders had helped bring the culprit to the police when he burnt down the houses in the village and the other buildings, the school science lab would have been saved.”
