A man charged with dangerous driving causing the death of a 24-year-old man appeared for mention in the Waigani Committal court on Wednesday.
Taina Koal from Pomio in East New Britain, a customer service executive with the Australia-New Zealand Visa Centre in Port Moresby, was charged with one count of dangerous driving causing the death of Deshra Jimberi.
Police allege that on Sept 9, at Tuna Bay Road in Port Moresby’s Sabama suburb, Koal drove a car in a manner police described as “dangerous”.
It was alleged that Koal was trying to overtake a taxi when he saw a Toyota Coaster bus approaching.
A police document said Koal quickly swung the car to his left when he realised the bus was near.
He hit the back of the bus.
Jimberi, who was sitting at the back seat of the bus with his head out the window, was struck by the car and died instantly.
It was alleged that the bus involved in the accident was not identified and yet to be located.
The court heard that Jimberi is from Hawain in East Sepik.
Magistrate Cosmas Bidar extended bail and adjourned the matter to Oct 18 for mention.
He asked that Koal remain in Port Moresby until completion of his case.
