A COMMITTAL court in Waigani explained a man’s murder charge for allegedly killing another man in Port Moresby a month ago and set June 7 for mention.
Magistrate Danny Wakikura read the charge to Mathias Wot, of Kualage village, Nebilyer, Western Highlands, and told him that he would be remanded unless a National Court bail was granted.
“Committal court has no power to grant bail for the charge against you.
“Your bail application must be filed at the National Court if you wish to,” he said.
He further told Wot that he was innocent until proven guilty in court.
“The higher court will decide whether you have killed the person or not.
“It is now up to the police to provide all the necessary evidence,” he added.
Police alleged that on between 11pm and 11.30pm on March 26, at Air Transport Squadron (ATS) block one settlement, Wot with three friends went to a trade store to buy beer when they saw the victim (Cerdeic Trongu) sleeping on road next to his house.
It was alleged that Wot and his friends were drunk at that time.
Wot allegedly picked up a blue berry alcohol bottle containing some leftover and poured it into Trongu’s ear.
Trongu’s nephew Samuel Wafingra, who was looking after him, allegedly saw what was happening and went to stop them but Wot allegedly punched Wafingra.
Trongu and Silem Wirrie, who were asleep on the road that time, woke up and a fight broke out between them.
The fight allegedly got worse and Wot called his relatives who then joined the fight.
One of Wot’s relatives allegedly sustained bush knife wounds from the fight when Trongu, Wafingra and Wirrie fled the scene.
Wot and his friends were angry and allegedly got a taxi, went looking for Trongu, Wafingra and Wirrie, caught Trongu and Wirrie and allegedly cut them.
Both Trongu and Wirrie were rushed to the Port Moresby General Hospital but Trongu was later pounced dead.
The matter was reported and Wot was arrested.
