Man charged with sexually assaulting toddler
The National, Thursday 23rd Febuary 2012
POLICE have charged a man with rape after an assault on a three-year old girl at a logging site in Open Bay, Pomio, East New Britain.
New Guinea Islands’ divisional commander Anton Billie said the man, 34, was in custody awaiting his court appearance.
He said the attack occurred at the Open Bay reforestation camp. The suspect was drinking alcohol with workmates including the girl’s father, who was watching her playing nearby.
The suspect was later seen picking up the girl and playing with her. When he saw that the attention of his colleagues was diverted elsewhere, he allegedly carried the girl to the back of a house.
When the father realised that his daughter was missing, they began looking for her.
They later found the suspect half naked and lying on the victim.
Police alleged that he was using his fingers to sexually assault the toddler.
Billie said it made it him sick to hear such reports.
He said parents needed to supervise and keep watch on their daughters and should not trust anyone to be alone with them.
