Man dead, another in critical condition after accident

A man died and another passenger sustained major injuries on the head in car accident at the Maprik Telekom exchange tower on Monday afternoon.

According to witness Amos Timothy, a Land Cruiser belonging to the PNG Power Maprik ran off the road.

Timothy, the public relations officer with the Papindo Group of Companies in Maprik said that the real cause of the accident had yet to be established by police. “I came to the accident site a few minutes after to find the driver and the other passenger lying on the grass,” Timothy said.

It is believed that the two men involved in the accident were staff of PNG Power in Maprik. Timothy said he helped the two onto his car  and drove them to the Maprik Rural Hospital.

The driver of the car was rushed down to Boram General Hospital in Wewak and died a few hours upon arrival. The deceased was identified as Lainus Walandi from Maprik 1 village in the Maprik-Wora LLG.

Police in Maprik are now calling on to the drivers and passengers to be careful when driving as during festive session, accident may occur.
