VILLAGERS living along the Kabiufa section of the Highlands Highway in Eastern Highlands are mourning the death of businessman in a road accident last Friday afternoon.

A 10-seater vehicle, belonging to the Simbu provincial government crashed into a PMV bus claiming the life of Jim Takis.

Takis, 47, was the driver and owner of the bus.

According to an eyewitness, a community leader, the 10-seater vehicle was travelling at speed while approaching the Notofana 7-Mile corner near Kabiufa.

The bus had just dropped off passengers and was slowly making its way back onto the road when the vehicle crashed on the driver’s side, causing the bus to overturn.

The eyewitness said locals ran to the scene to help the bus passengers and saw Takis trapped  between the engine and his seat.

He said there were beer cans in the 10-seater vehicle.

He said it took the locals one and half hour to free the bus driver.

“We used crowbars, iron rods and axes to cut open the front of the bus to free his legs, which were trapped between the bus engine,” the eyewitness said.

Takis was taken to the Goroka Base Hospital where he died later.
