Man gets time for selling drugs
A 25-YEAR-OLD father of two was jailed for three months by the Mt Hagen District Court on Friday for marijuana possession.
Londe Mek, from Western Highland’s Tambul, pleaded guilty to having the drug in the Mt Hagen market on May 22.
According to police files, Mek was stopped by policemen on foot patrol who conducted a body search and found seven rolls of marijuana in his trouser pocket.
Mek was seen selling to people in the market.
In mitigation, Mek told magistrate Lydia Karre he was only trying to earn an income to support his family.
Prosecutor Sam Nili asked the court to impose the maximum penalty on the defendant.
“People like Mek destroy the lives of many people, including students,” he said.
“Marijuana addicts are known to be involved in many crimes like rape, theft and other criminal activities.
“Mek did not respect and care for the well-being of his two children and wife.
“As a father, he was expected to show good example to his children.”
Nili said giving Mek a custodial sentence could help him to turn over a new leaf and become a good citizen when “he has served his jail sentence and released”.
Karre then jailed Mek three months with hard labour in Baisu jail.
