A MAN accused of discharging a firearm on Saturday outside the Buka police station in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville has been arrested, police commander assistant commissioner Francis Tokura says.
“He is now been detained at the Buka police station,” he said
The allegedly fired a .303 riffle during a rampage that started after a Buin man was killed by four suspects on Friday night on Sohano Island – a short boat ride from Buka town.
Tokura said yesterday that the suspect was part of a group of opportunists who burnt down 34 houses on Sohano.
“We believe that these opportunists wanted to remove the murder suspects and kill them. This caused panic among 50 detainees and prisoners held in the cells and they broke out.
Tokura said most of the detainees returned and taken to Beikut prison.
“We have arrested and detained six suspects for stoning vehicles. We are also investigating the arson and the looting incidents at the Old Compound.”
