AN elderly man was killed allegedly by his son last Friday at St Xavier’s Secondary School on Kairiru Island, East Sepik, police in Wewak say.
Police report said the death occurred between 7-8pm on Sept 14.
“The suspect, who is the son of the deceased, is now in custody at Wewak Police Station cell,” police said.
A police spokesperson said they were investigating the death and formal charges would be laid later.
“We are waiting for the medical reports from the hospital,” the spokesperson said.
St Xavier’s deputy principal Godfrey Sareo said the suspect had told him the night of the death that he had killed a man he claimed to be a sorcerer.
“When hearing all these stories I started asking the boy about his father’s whereabouts but he told me his father was still in Wewak,” Sareo said.
He said he took the boy to community police, while other officers went to the house.
The body and suspect were both taken to Wewak the same night.
Police identified the deceased as Alois Haripem Kabaru, in his mid-60s, and originally from Woginara village in the West Coast area of Wewak.
Kabaru had lived in Chem village on Kairiru Island for 50 years.
