Man killed in hit-and-run accident

A MAN died instantly when he was knocked down by a speeding vehicle in a hit-and-run accident at Lae market.
The accident happened at the junction of Air Corps Road and Mangola Street on Saturday before noon.
The deceased, identified only as Mezeka, from Indagen in Kabwum district, Morobe, was trying to cross the busy road when he was hit.
Mezeka, who is in his 50s, resides at Warakalap, 14-Mile outside Lae along the highway.
The vehicle involved, according to police at the scene, was a PMV bus.
Witnesses said the man was carrying a poly bag containing squashed aluminium cans which he had collected and was on his way to a recycling yard.
He was crossing the road between the main market and the rainbow store when he was hit.
Witnesses identified him also as the regular can and plastic bottle collector who frequented the market and the industrial areas collecting the wares to make a living.
The body was later taken to the Angau Memorial Hospital morgue.
