A HUSBAND who went to rescue his wife, who was attacked by a man, died from knife wounds on Sunday morning.

West New Britain provincial police commander Samson Siguyaru said the wife was treated in hospital for injuries and sent home.

The deceased has been identified as Casper Mulou, 28, from Bialla. His wife is Patronila Komilut, 24, from Takubar village, in Kokopo district.

Siguyaru said a man from the Vunamurmur ward in Kokopo was detained at the Kimbe police station in connection with the killing.

He said Komilut was woken up at her family home by a man between 2am and 3am on Sunday, who told her to follow him to her husband.

He said the man then tried to rape her. When she yelled out for help, her husband came to her rescue.

But the man turned on him and hit him with a bush knife. Mulou died minutes later.

Siguyaru said the man later surrendered to police.

Siguyaru urged the family of the deceased to allow the law to take its course and to avoid any form of retaliation.
