Man on sex charges has term suspended

A man from East Sepik who sexual touched his six-year-old cousin sister two years ago in Port Moresby was handed a suspended six-year jail term yesterday.
The Waigani National Court, presided by Justice Panuel Mogish, ordered the man to serve one year and six months in jail after he deducted the time spent in remand.
The court heard that the man was charged with two counts of sexually touching his cousin between June 1 and 30, 2015.
As a result, the victim suffered injuries to her private parts and developed complications.
The court considered the prevalence of the offence and that the man had saved the court’s time by pleading guilty.
He was also a first-time offender.
The court issued a six-year sentence for each charge to be served concurrently, but deducted two years, three months and five days for time he served in custody.
The judge imposed a term of one year and six months but suspended the whole sentence, placing him on a good behaviour bond for two years instead.
