POLICE in Bougainville are looking for a man believed to be armed who is threatening to shoot anyone who wants to arrest him.
Bougainville Police Service chief Francis Tokura said the man could have a “high-powered weapon” in his possession.
“He is now in hiding,” Tokura said.
“He allegedly threatened to shoot at any officer who wants to arrest him for damaging a police vehicle and for producing homebrew in Buka.”
Tokura said police arrested 14 people on Sunday for damaging a police vehicle and for producing homebrew at a settlement near the airport.
“But the main suspect who issued the threat is now in hiding,” he said. “We are now searching for him.
“I’m also appealing to the community leaders to educate their youths on the referendum.
“One of the pillars in the Bougainville Peace Agreement leading to the referendum is to respect the law.”
He said when the referendum was near, it was good for people on the island to know the terms guiding the referendum.
Tokura said the windscreen of the new police vehicle was damaged when police went to the settlement on Saturday night to check on reports of homebrew production.
Police withdrew to the Buka police station and returned on Sunday and arrested 14 suspects.
“We also confiscated equipment used to produce homebrew,” he said.
“The suspects are detained at the Buka police station.
“However the main suspect is on the run.”
He appealed for community’s help to get the suspect arrested.
