A MAN who speared another during a fight has been placed on a two-year good behaviour bond and told to pay the victim K1,000 within six months.

Justice Panuel Mogish found Aihi Oai guilty of causing grievous bodily harm on a Peter Aitsi at Babiko village in Bereina, Central.

He reminded Oai that spears were meant for hunting animals, not human beings.

He said at around 10pm, the offender went to Aitsi’s home and told him to come out.

Mogish said: “You were armed with a bow and arrow and a hunting spear. The victim came out. You both argued and then you plunged the hunting spear (knife) into the left side of his abdomen. The victim fell down and was taken to Inawaia sub-health centre with the spear still embedded in his stomach.

“He was subsequently referred to the Port Moresby General Hospital where the spear was removed from his stomach following an operation.”

He said what made the offence serious was that Oai deliberately armed himself with a bow and arrow and a spear and went looking for the victim.

“And when he found him, he stabbed the victim on his stomach with the spear. Hunting spears are made to hunt animals, not human beings,” Mogish said.

The court sentenced him to six years in prison but suspended the sentence and placed him on good behaviour bond for two years on the condition that he paid the victim K1,000 within six months.

If he failed to do that, he would serve the six years in prison.
