Management blamed for Kerevat jailbreak

TOTAL ignorance and neglect of the prison management to watch over prisoners led to 11 detainees escaping from Kerevat jail in East New Britain last Sunday, Correctional Service acting commissioner Stephen Pokanis, pictured, says.
He said an explanation that detainees were bored and frustrated by long waits for court cases that had caused them to break out was an excuse.
He said the escape took place because the management had not looked after or watched over the detainees properly.
He said it was “purely careless and ignorance of the officers” on duty.
“What is happening now is failing to do our work and they are not physically walking around and checking to make sure that prisoners are inside and secured,” he said.
“What happened in the jail is the total failure of the warders.
“Every correctional officer knows that the remanded prisoners are kept and are waiting for their court trials.”
Acting jail commander Superintendent Margret Garap has been instructed to suspend the two officers on duty on the night of the escape and the case investigated.
It was reported earlier that 11 prisoners escaped from prison last week.
The escape was blamed for long await of cases by the prisoners which frustrated them and resulted in them escaping.
The escapees are still on the run and joint man hunt by police and prison officers to have achieved nothing.
