GOBE oilfields landowner leader Augustine Mano donated K20,000 to the SBSL Mendi Muruks as a long-time supporter of the flagship rugby league team for Southern Highlands  last weekend.
Mendi MP Pastor Isaac Joseph delivered the money to the Muruks during their pre-match “team talk” before they played Hela Wigmen in Lae last Sunday.
Joseph said Mano, who is also the managing director of Mineral Resources Development Company (MRDC), could not make it to the game and passed on the money to him to present.
The Mendi MP encouraged the  Muruks to continue to build on their reputation in  the competition as a disciplined and quality franchise and to play well.
Joseph said Muruks were a flagship team for SHP that had done the province proud and he was pleased to be associated with it.
The MP also praised and commended the single-handed efforts of franchise owner Thomas Higgins in shaping the Muruks into a formidable force in the semi-professional competition since taking over in 2005.
Joseph described Higgins as more than sponsor as his approach to the players and officials was “more like a father and mentor”.
He also thanked Muruks management for his appointment as patron of the Muruks.
Higgins, who is also the managing director of Structural Bridging Systems Ltd (SBSL) said the team was pleased to fulfil the MP’s request and welcomed him on board.
