MUCH has been discussed and agreed on between Papua New Guinea and Australia regarding the Manus Island refugee asylum centre but the topic has been penned in for further elaboration between the countries soon.
In a letter to Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill said the issue could be further discussed during an upcoming PNG-Australia Ministerial Forum to be held in PNG.
A date is yet to be set.
“The Ministerial Forum presents the ideal opportunity to discuss additional issues concerning the Refugee Processing Centre as well as other bilateral issues of immediate concern,” O’Neill said.
The two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Saturday to re-open the Manus Island asylum.
PNG Minister for Foreign Affairs Rimbink Pato and Australian Trade Minister Dr Craig Emerson signed the agreement at Russky Island in Vladivostok, Russia, during the APEC Economic Leaders’ Summit.
Both prime ministers were present.
