THE Manus Amateur Boxing Association has selected a five-man boxing team to represent the island province at the national championships in June in Vanimo, Sandaun province.
Newly-elected chairman of Manus boxing Robert Matthew announced the team earlier in the week after the provincial championships took place over the weekend.
“The five boxers chosen were the winners of their weight divisions.
“The four main clubs – Vujou, Lehei, Pontoon and Lolo participated and the action was very encouraging.
“There were fights from 48kg division to the 64kg division and I am pleased to say that Manus will have a good team for this year’s national championships,” Matthew said.
He said the team would seek sponsorship from local businesses to pay for the travel to Vanimo and appealed to the Manus community for support.
“We ask anyone interested in helping to contact me on 7233-5062 so we can get all boxers and the team officials to Vanimo.”
Team Manus: Pogur Poaka (48kg), Divid Morobe (54kg), Sisky Chapau (57kg), Levi Pokihou (60kg) and Dickson Keket (64kg).
The team officials: Robert Matthew (team manager), Michael Kelly (trainer), Ben Matthew (assistant trainer), Nawi Changau (coordinator) and Ruth Saupo (referee and judge representative).
“The boxers have already begun their training and we are also aiming to raise enough funds to send the whole team to Sandaun in June,” Matthew said.
