THE Malaysian Association of Papua New Guinea (MAPNG) has again come to the assistance of charity organisations in Port Moresby with a donation of K50,000  yesterday.
Missionaries of Charity, a Catholic charity organisation that runs free literacy and feeding programmes for children in settlement areas of Hanuabada, Baruni and Goilala, were the happy recipients of K30,000 and 16 cartons of food and water.
The Malaysian High Commissioner to PNG, Solomon Islands and representative of Vanuatu, Datin Blanche Olbery, acknowledged the mission which has served the people of PNG since 1974.
“On behalf of the people of Malaysia in PNG, we thank you for all the good work that you do, we hope that this little donation will continue to support your projects of educating and minding children’s welfare and we look forward to offering more assistance,” Olbery said.
She also presented K20,000 to Eda Mauri, a Port Moresby-based charity organisation that supports under-privileged children with school fees.
Eda Mauri assistant Cathy Johnston, who received the cheque, said the money would go towards assisting less fortunate parents who cannot afford to pay for their children’s school fees.
She said Eda Mauri, founded by Community Development Minister Dame Carol Kidu in 2002, had assisted more than 2,000 children.
MAPNG president Nathaniel Ho said Malaysians in PNG were always happy to help.
“We like to be involved in assisting charity groups that are assisting the less fortunate in communities.
“The money donated is not our money. This is part of the K520,000 funds raised at our annual charity golf tournament in Port Moresby recently for supporting charity work around PNG,” Ho said.
“We thank the many contributors who helped to raise this money for a charitable cause.”
