FEATHERSTONE made a winning start to their Reserves League campaign at South Leeds Stadium on Wednesday against Hunslet Hawks.
Papua New Guinea international Larzen Marabe bagged a hat-trick of tries and Tom Carr crossed twice as Rovers dominated the match.
Featherstone’s display pleased reserves head coach Danny Evans who said: “It was important we got off to a good start to the season. We came away with a victory against a spirited Hawks team.
“I thought our defence was good although we did let in a couple of soft tries at the end of the game.
“There are lots of improvements to be made but the players are definitely heading in the right direction. Generally, I thought it was a good team display.”
Rovers started strongly and went ahead after five minutes with Carr’s first try after a neat move saw Marabe supply the final pass.
Rovers were 18-0 by the 31st minute when Marabe scored his first try after a clever kick from Adam Jones.
The one-way traffic continued 15 minutes into the second period when good work by David Nurse paved the way for Hardaker to side step the Hawks full back to score an impressive try.
Hunslet, which has on its roster Charlie Wabo, Michael Mark and Nicko Slain opened their account with a 62nd minute touchdown but Rovers replied with two tries in three minutes from Marabe.
Good passing saw Jones make a half break before feeding Marabe who strolled in for an easy score and the PNG player completed his treble.
courtesy off Matty Johnson’s break and a good off-load.
In a scrappy last 10 minutes, Hunslet completed the scoring with two tries.
