Marane Rats hold off Brothers in suburban league clash

Sports

ONLY affiliated clubs played in the Pom Suburban Rugby League competition at Kone Tigers oval over the weekend.
This saw 18 teams with A grade, U20 and women’s divisions playing their respective matches.
In the A grade round five clash, Marane Rats beat Nane Brothers 12-4; the Rats’ three tries to a solitary effort by Brothers were the highlights of an otherwise scrappy game.
Rats opened with fullback Simon Auro after impressive work by the back line to lead 4-0.
Then from another move, Rats halfback Henny Kepas crashed through to increase the deficit to 8-0.
Two minutes before half time an inside pass saw Thomas Alaka touchdown to bring the scores to 8-4.
Match referee Glenn Paki was threatened by a Rats supporter delaying the start of the second 40 minutes.
Rats management were required to remove the offending supporter before Paki could return.
Rats are likely to be fined for the supporter’s action as this lack of respect and poor attitude is an ongoing issue in the competition.
Minutes into the second half, Rats banked their third try to inter-change forward Peter Pagali to make it 12-4.
The score remained the same despite the efforts of both sides to score more points in a desperate but poorly executed half of football.
In the other matches Kagua Woodman beat Northern Warriors 24-12, ICCC Tigers kept Eastern End United scoreless 8-0, Mountain Bulls brought down Killerton Falcons 16-10, Ipwenz Raiders edged Amalabak Hornets 14-12 and Mautana Roosters saw off Ms 8 Wings 6-4.
