PRIME Minister James Marape yesterday committed K250,000 to support Radio Maria PNG Sharathon in Port Moresby.
Marape in his address at the event yesterday said the Government would continue to support various church-government partnership programmes.
“Churches are big providers in services of health and education and other sectors,” he said.
“The Government will support, in terms of policy and resourcing, and you are allowed to have the autonomy and freedom to continue to deliver those services.
“As we work through the many challenges that arise, including the coronavirus, we can remain totally committed and focused for inspiration from God.”
Marape urged mediums such as Radio Maria to continue to disseminate correct information to society as well as keep a check and balance on the Government and public service machinery.
“Our government today will try our absolute best, we have various programmes running, we want to distribute seedlings into the future,” he said.
“Through these sorts of mediums, we want to encourage our people to work hard in the land that you have right across the country.
“Land is already there, we must engage the people to go back and toil on their land.
“Continue to advocate and while you talk about Christ’s love and message, sound positive message and challenge our citizens to think big and beyond present situations.”
Cardinal Sir John Ribat said Radio Maria was a national radio network for the Catholic Church in PNG.
“The people of PNG own this radio and we are now going to fundraise to support its work,” he said.
“The Government’s support is a great help to Radio Maria throughout the country.
“It is available for all of us and it is important that we help to fundraise to support its work and your presence is encouraging us to move forward.”
Radio Maria PNG president Kila Ai acknowledged Marape for his support to the Sharathon, adding the fundraising drive was to extend the network throughout the country and provide leadership within the region.

  • PM of PNG has donated some funds to radio marria which only covers few landmass of PNG. However, that radio station is so familiar and we know that there is no important news and massage about Jesus Christ our God is clearly presented to change our attitudes and lifestyles. To make it worse, that radio station doesn’t reach every part of this country but the only lae, pom, and goroka and other towns. The amount donated by government is much greater to do her own businesses.
Therefore, as concerned, we people in the highlands region especially in most rural centers of PNG needing radio station. All of Kandep district, lagaip porgera district, kombiam ambum district, all parts of Hela province and Southern highlands are needing radio station. Why because important news are pass quickly into the villages and community through this medium of communication. News is very important for us the people of PNG because we are still developing.
However, as concern, please PM of PNG must transfer massage to his counterparts to make sure all the province should be installed with FM channels.
Mipela laikm 93 fm 96 fm 100 fm na legend fm na NBC radio lo Tari na Enga.

    • To think that Radio Maria is only reaching few listeners by way of its limited coverage to few centres is not true. Catholic Church network in PNG is bigger or nationwide than what you can imagine given the fact that it has dioceses in almost all provinces of png and parishes scattered throughout PNG. I suppose the aim of fund raiser is to enable its total coverage of all provinces. Once its done, I bet the popularity of this station alone will be become much bigger and wider than or equal to nbc compared to all other known radio stations.. Therefore, I believe the cash pledge from PMs office is in order and worthy of the cause. Apart from NBC, most other commercial fm radio services network are just good for music only.
