THE Government, churches, organisations and individuals have condemned the beating to death of young mother-of-two Jenelyn Kennedy as barbaric, inhumane and senseless.
Prime Minister James Marape led the nation in condemning the beating which led to her death on Tuesday at Korobosea in Port Moresby allegedly from her partner, saying “those involved in lawlessness and violence must be prosecuted”. “I offer my sympathy to the family of the innocent beautiful child, and I call for the prosecution of the accused,” Marape said. “Police must conduct prosecution accurately without failure.
“Penalty provisions for domestic violence or any crime for that matter are in our laws. What we need is an effective prosecution.”
He called on men to respect women and girls.
“This (act of violence) is not a Melanesian or cultural thing. Be caring to our daughters, sisters and women,” Marape said.
Rev Roger Joseph, the PNG Council of Churches general secretary said PNG had become a sick society.
“There is no longer any respect for human life, more so, respect for the weaker sex,” he said.
Pastor Mike Field of the Unity Church urged fathers to tell their sons to stop assaulting women.
“Another life has been lost. I want to call on fathers to please tell your sons that this must stop,” he said.
National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop said “no amount of excuse can justify violence or death. It is just simply wrong and unacceptable. We are all shocked and grieving once again at this senseless killing.”
Shirley Kaupa of Magna Carta Inc said they “condemn in the highest possible terms the brutal murder of the late Jenelyn Kennedy”.
The Catholic Professionals Society PNG condemned “in the strongest terms the streak of senseless, barbaric and inhuman killings against women in PNG”.
“This is unacceptable. This behavior is an evil that must be eradicated,” a spokesman said.
“The killing of young Jennelyn Kennedy is horrific. While we call on women to take care in their relationships we also call on men to take responsibility and exercise maturity in taking women into their lives as spouses and girlfriends. Women are not to be used and thrown away. It is inconceivable and unacceptable.”

  • The Papua New Guinea government is failing to protect victims of family violence, according to a new report by Human Rights Watch.
The report, titled Bashed Up: Family Violence in PNG, found that women are left unprotected, even when they have gone to great lengths to seek help.

It accused the government of neglecting survivors’ needs for safety, services and justice, and found women often had no choice but to live with abusive partners.

More than two thirds of PNG women have experienced family violence. In some parts of the country, 80 per cent of men admit they have been responsible for sexual violence against their partner.
Human Rights Watch calls on PNG to lift its game in tackling family violence(Jemima Garrett)

Two years ago the PNG government passed the Family Protection Act which set new penalties for family violence and was designed to protect and assist victims.

Despite, men continue bash up their wives and girls. This problem behind is that, the government has failed to formulate a policy that would guide the Act so that it surely achieve its intended purpose.

  • The law was already there, just execute it and make fair to the young lady.

Put that culprit into a high penalty without remorse.

  • I am a father to two girls and seeing this act of terror I am astonished why government for the last decade or so failed to come up with policies or regulations to guide enforcement of woman rights law so that perpetrators are dealt with accordingly. That is why sometimes we take law into our own hands!

  • We have been talking about this for many years but we are not making our sympathy and lawful and respectful talk into actions that represent change. My own daughters suffer from inaction on this front.

  • He needs to be hanged because we had done enough awareness for people to respect each other especially respect for women.

  • Another problem has occurred and people and bureaucrats are talking and expressing their views but when days, weeks, months and years are gone everything seems to vanish. How can we put a stop to such problems for good.

Only government has the power to do so.

  • There must be strategy in place to Curb this trend. Where is the statistic pointing which places or region highly have such inhuman. We don’t claim PNG as a whole because there are people IN PNG are advocate of this violence against women. We need to be realistic and not claim whole PNG. The statistic from research will proven the main region and places which will then be the Government focus to get the l;aw into their brains with the word of God. Otherwise these the matter of ages because culturally some region still look at women as no body. At the same time we don’t claim that PNGean have the same level of thinking in terms of adaptation into civilized understanding and have christian values of life. There is total difference from the way of life from different culture perspective. Even some just wake up from their primitive zone and trying see that they are fit into this modern society. Paralyzed by the cultural sock and that when some people does not what is women are alike. That result in numerous report of different level of violence that all used on Women nowadays in PNG. Need ten times strategies to curb this trend otherwise its going to stay.

  • Men with Money will do what ever the like and get away with it, ITS FACT.
It’s all comes down to women folks, Happy life is not always about Men and Money.
There are many Strong and Independent Women around the World & PNG.
Back to you ladies of png…

  • Verbal condemnation is insufficient. Condemn, condemn, condemn…..and nothing happens. This country needs to make a stand and execute the the laws that are in place. Willful murders must be killed. Send them overseas to be executed if we are scared of doing it here.

  • Prevention is BETTER then CURE in terms of health. In this case, She died from having no respect by the partner, care house has failed and law enforcing body failed tremendously after seeking assistance.
    1. Partner is a DEVIL
    2. Care house should intervene.
    3. Law enforcing body (Police) failed at all levels

Law is there to enforce however implementers are failing. The innocent young lady should not die if police have played their duties without fear and favour.

  • Enough is Enough. This act of killing women/girls must stop. ACT NOW. IMPOSE DEATH PENALTY ON MURDERERS PERIOD!!

  • Send the murderer to prison (dark cell) with hard labor. Ensure the CIS, police and judges must be aware as stated he got the money and can do anything. Watch out for the crony lawyers. Our justice system is weak because money had overpowered everything.

  • Our government and justice system is very very weak. DEATH PENALTY was passed already as an act so why not apply it to BOSIP KAWI to set an example and send the message out to all the accusers of GENDER BASED VIOLENCE. Why it will not work and waste of time passing acts in Parliament is because we are afraid and we are not strong but a weak. Let’s try to conqure fear and be like Arab countries or strong countries to execute such law so that will eventual change the perception and perspective of every person in our society to be consious and value life.
