Marape welcomes Pruaitch, 19 MPs who crossed floor

PRIME Minister James Marape has welcomed Opposition Leader Patrick Pruaitch and 19 MPs who have crossed the floor to the Government benches.
“Pruaitch has given me a letter stating the principles (behind) their move – not to seek jobs but to make policy contributions to the Government,” Marape said. On whether he will consider offering ministerial portfolios to the group, Marape said Pruaitch in his letter never mentioned any such condition.
“Pruaitch, by virtue of stepping down from a very high office, is forfeiting resources, including staff positions and privileges that go with the office. (He will) now be an ordinary member of Parliament on this side but maintaining his leadership as party leader.
“That’s a huge sacrifice by any measure and that shows the level of commitment they have. And in that letter, he never once did request for a ministry.”
Marape knew that bringing 19 MPs across from the other side could put pressure on him and his Cabinet composition.
Pruaitch said the interest of the country was paramount.
“We have experience and some of the best people in the Opposition such as Sir Mekere Morauta, Dr Allan Marat and Joseph Lelang,” he said.
“I have served twice as treasurer. So we need to lend this experience to Marape to develop strategies for the betterment of our country.
“Let’s leave politics aside,” he said.

  • You have been very faithful and loyal to the opposition since the day you have been elected as the member for Kandrian/Gloucester Open until now you have moved to the government with all the other opposition MPs. Never did I hear about you moving from side to side or jumping from one group to another like others do. You are a true Pikinini AROWE and now you are in the government, I believe you will contribute more towards the goals and objective of this new government in order to bring PNG forward.

Congratulations my Honorable Member, Joseph Lelang
