Marape’s slogan unrealistic

Letters

THE statement made by Prime Minister James Marape when he was elected in 2018, was well received by Papua New Guineans who anticipated the dawn of a new era.
His keynote speech in parliament about making PNG the richest black Christian nation on eart h flooded local and international media.
As an educated person, I cannot understand his statement especially when Papua New Guinea was ranked 155 out of 189 countries in human development index.
Our neighbouring Melanesian brother Fiji was ranked 98/189 countries while another black nation Jamaica was ranked 96th.
I see no correlation between Marape’s rhetoric and ambitious words when the country is ranked lower than Fiji.
Goals have to be realistic and achievable that even the illiterate can understand them.
In tertiary institutions, students are taught how to set and achieve goals.
The goals should be SMART which means, specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound.
How can you expect a nation who sits at the bottom of the food chain to climb up within 10 years?
That’s ridiculous.
Unless if you do some drastic changes in the Government and the country, I assure you that you won’t even see the slightest improvement in our economy or human development index rankings.
The thing that contradicts his rhetoric speeches is the possibility for PNG to become the richest black Christian nation on earth within a decade.
Let’s be real in assessing this statement.
It may be possible if citizens work in harmony, directed by those in authority and work hard to achieve it.
However, changes do take time and for such a goal to be achieved will take a generation or even longer.
Marape has not done anything to change his own Tari-Pori electorate.
How on earth can Marape transform PNG in a decade if he has not been doing that in his own electorate?
The second keynote address that he made was about the performance of his cabinet ministers.
Papua New Guineans were thrilled because the speech pleased them.
Marape emphasised that he would select cabinet ministers based on merit and performances.
He said their performances would be assessed in six months and non-performing ministers would be sacked.
But not much has been done about the non-performing ministers.
Qualified MPs who can be given portfolios are not being considered for ministries.
What sort of key performance indicators is Marape using to assess his ministers?
These are my personal views that I feel the need to share with everyone to think about.

  • Thanks KP. Truly agree everything you’ve stated.

Only and If only, Marape can start by tackling the massive and stinking, systemic and systematic Corruption in the public sector, our country will move forward in leaps and bounds.

Otherwise, we will only have unachievable dreams.

  • .. I don’t want to be too negative about that slogan…. PMJM is the captain of our ship now…if the captain tells you,, “the ship is about to sink, but I can see an island afar from where we are…are you ready to swim…you got to fight the currents…it is only possible when you have a possitive mind…and a right attitude… PMJM announced what he saw… It is every one’s responsibility…. It has to start with the renewal of our minds….” as a man thinks in his heart…so is he”…. A good place to start is … start eradicating customs and traditional believes that hinders personal development….time management, personal hygiene, backyard beatification, keep you rubbish and dispose them at appropriate places, stop expecting miracles but work, work, and work, don’t wait till you find employment and jobs.,, Work is always available …this are simple challenges we confront with possitive mind and rest will fall in line…. When Joseph said he had a dream. ,, everybody else thought he was crazy…

  • W. Amesi your comments are highly saluted, the vision is for the nation, we are take that vision, do something about it, PMJP will do his part, we do our part….those who complaint are vision less people don’t get anywhere…

  • I am fully in support of PMJM’s slogan ‘PNG to become the richest Christian black nation’ and Take back PNG. What everyone should understand is that what ever statement a leader makes becomes a policy matter and those in the bureaucracy should come up with strategies to make it work. Within 18 months of his reign I can see major changes in the mining, gas and petroleum sector which is the prime income earner for the country. The next is revamping of the agriculture sector which is the backbone of this country. I salute you PMJM you are heading the right direction.
As individuals we should see it as an opportunity to change our mindset. Forego the traditions that hinder personal growth, clean our homes, have respect for the opinion of others, use time wisely in doing productive things and striving to do good for ourselves and our immediate family. Teach our children to be self reliant and creative in whatever they do.

  • Marape’s goal in making PNG the richest black country is unrealistic. To do it in 10 years is a joke. Marape has the potential to make a good prime minister however unrealistic goals like this can unravel his legacy.
