RABAUL MP Alan Marat has urged teachers, parents and communities in East New Britain to protect and encourage students to excel in learning.

“Every child’s education is a communal responsibility. We should all embrace it. If a school child is bright, everyone in the community must rid their hearts of jealousy and be proud of the child’s academic abilities. They are blessings from God for the community,” he said.

“If a child is exceptionally beautiful, or handsome, it is not for anyone to think evil of him or her.”

He issued the challenge last Friday at the opening of the 2016 academic year in Rabaul.

Marat said teachers in ENB should now know what they had achieved last year and pursue better outcomes this year.

“Do we now know and agree on what we must achieve in formal education as a province by end of this year and beyond? Do we understand what quality education is? Do we now know what is stopping us in from achieving quality education? Do we now know how to improve the status of quality education in the province?” he said.

Marat said many issues arose in the 2015 academic year.

“We had parental issues with their school-aged children, parental issues with children’s teachers, issues between teachers and students and issues among teachers etc,” he said.
