March 16 should be Tree Planting Day

Letters

MARCH 16 should be marked the Pacific Tree Planting Day in honour of our founding father Grand chief Sir Michael Somare’s burial and his efforts to save our forests when he was prime minister.
If we lose the world’s forests, we lose the fight against climate change.
Rainforests are Earth’s greatest utility.
They are our planet’s lungs, the thermostat and air conditioning system.
We have to honour his memory by upholding what he stood for.
I remember his speech in Mark Solon Auditorium at the University of Goroka during his visit with son Arthur in 2018.
He said PNG was experiencing effects of climate change and it would be best for us to remain united to tackle the challenges.
