Marijuana hidden in potatoes

POLICE found five kilograms of marijuana concealed in bags containing sweet potatoes at Roku, outside Port Moresby, on Friday.
In a statement, police said the marijuana was bundled in 140 bags of sweet potatoes, placed in a 20-foot container then transported from the Highlands through Lae into Port Moresby.
The drug was intercepted by police at the AES wharf in Roku.
National Capital District Met Supt Perou N’dranou said he was happy with the public for providing information to police who acted and removed the drug.
Met Supt N’dranou said if police had not removed, the drugs would have ended up on the treets.
“Those are the ones that influence our kids and the youths to be involved in robberies, causing violence and crimes in the city so this is good work done by police and those who supplied the information,”he said.
Met Supt N’dranou urged the public to work with police to provide information of criminal activities happening in the city and their communities.
He said if they did not do their part, police would not know what was going on around each community in the city.
He called on those involved to stop.
Met Supt N’dranou said security guards manning the wharf became suspicious when a group of young men arrived at the premises and began fighting over the cargo stored in a blue 20ft shipping container.
They rang the drug squad who then impounded the cargo and found 19 packages of parched and compressed marijuana weighing about 5kgs each hidden inside the first lot of 20 sweet potato bags.
Met Supt N’dranou said 119 more bags would be opened and searched today in the combined operation involving the drug squad and the dog unit (K9).

  • The security officers who helped police remove the drugs off the streets should be commended by the police minister or commissioner in person. The positive impact on the security officers would be immense and more of their colleagues would want to do the same.
It is time the system recognised the small heroes.
