Markets in East New Britain now open

Letters

WE want to welcome back our mothers to the markets in East New Britain.
We have gone through a difficult time over the last weeks, but we have to be content with what the Government has put forward
With the uplifting of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) 28-day partial lockdown in East New Britain, the Provincial Market Authority is re-opening the main market facilities in Kokopo, Rabaul and Kerevat.
Markets will be back in full operations.
We have reopened the ones in Kerevat and Rabaul as they were closed during the lockdown period.
During the lockdown, only Kokopo market was open, allowing only vegetables, fruits and the craft market to open, but since last Wednesday, they are allowing vendors to market cooked food as well.
The betel nut and tobacco section will be open.
The authority will enforce strict measures under the “Niupla Pasin” such as of face masks, social distancing and washing of hands in markets.
We are not closing off satellite markets but we will continue to operate.
We have to start building the markets’ capacities.
This involves building toilets, shelters, beds and waste management washing basins for the vendors and the customers.

Acting Manager,
