Marlins tame Tigers in Goroka women’s softball
The National, Wednesday 29th Febuary 2012
UNIVERSITY of Goroka Marlins tamed Faniufa Highway Tigers 12-7 in the Goroka women’s softball competition at the National Sports Institute on Saturday. They continued their superb form thrashing a depleted Brown Eagles 16-4 on Sunday.
Marlins were in devastating form with ferocious batting and tight fielding to shut out Eagles who tried desperately to find the missing links.
But Eagles, fielding stand-in pitcher Nayel Kalai, first base custodian Judith Maira and former Kavieng representative Otta Tamenao to fill in the vacuum left by the Womola sisters Stella, Lisa and Heather and Sophie Jayess, proved too strong.
Infield errors and misfielding in the outfield was the Eagles worst enemy. The Marlins scored runs in all innings, including eight runs in the third inning.
Marlins are one of the teams making their debut in the competition this season under the stewardship of head coach Peter Byrd Saleau.
The women’s and men’s teams have been struggling to find their form against established teams and seem to be proving themselves as worthy contenders.
The women’s teams comprising first year students and seasoned campaigners, like mother-daughter combination of Kapa and Bonnie Malpo, Margaret Saleau, Freda Siladiot have led their charges well.
In the men’s division, Marlins beat Faniufa Highway Tigers 9-5 on Saturday but suffered a 12-5 thrashing at the hands of Laikos on Sunday.
Brown Eagles handed Tigers a 22-14 thumping after holding Laikos to a 4-4 draw on Saturday.
