TRADE, Commerce and Industry minister Richard Maru has challenged the company engaged in the Pacific Marine Industrial Zone project in Madang to come up with a quality product.

He told the China Shenyang International Corporation representatives last Friday that Papua New Guinea had developed a perception over the years that Chinese companies produced sub-standard work on projects.

“There is concern in Government and among our people about the quality of work done by Chinese companies in this country,” he said.

“Obviously, many people have the view that the quality of work is not good enough and we should be looking at contractors from other countries. “It is up to you to make sure you work closely with KCH (Kumul Consolidated Holdings Limited) and deliver the wharf and other aspects of this project to the highest standards.

“This project is one of the highest priority of this Government.

“Please ensure that there is integrity in terms of your work to ensure that we don’t have too many defects.”

Maru appealed to the company to ensure locals are given priority in terms of employment.

“Chinese companies coming to PNG bring in more Chinese employees to do basic jobs that can be done by Papua New Guineans.”
