cation is necessary but Papua New Guinea must prepare to meet the challenges that come with it, Grand Chief Sir Paulias Matane says.
He said this in support of Education secretary Dr Musawe Sinebare’s call for more teachers to be trained.
Sir Paulias said it was important for all children in the country to acquire basic education freely but it was equally important to ensure the challenges coupled with it were tackled.
While thanking the government for free education, he said it was necessary for the government to ensure resources and demands were met for all children to access education.
Sir Paulias said there was a shortage of teachers and it was vital for more teachers to be trained.
He said there was also a lack of resources, particularly classrooms.
“Many schools might not have the capacity in terms of learning facilities to cater for the growing number of students expected to attend schools now that free education is here,” Sir Paulias said.
“More teachers have to be recruited.
“And more resources, especially learning facilities, need to be provided as solutions to challenges.
“We should look for solutions.
“We should not remain stagnant with our problems.”
He said the number of highly educated people was increasing and there was no excuse for problems and challenges in all sectors being left unattended.
“After all, this is our country.
“We should all work together to address such challenges with assistance from the government,” he said.
