SEVENTEEN-year-old Kaminiel Matlaun of Utmei Secondary school, East New Britain, had an outstanding national championships in Kokopo last weekend, winning the open men’s 400m in 49.23secs from Kevin Kapmatana 49.42 and Theo Piniau 49.47.

Matlaun also won the open men’s 800m in 1min 59.05secs from Freddie Hongoworie of NCD.

The youngster from West New Britain has been very impressive all season and was selected to  attend the World Youth Championship in the Ukraine this month.

Unfortunately, he didn’t make it due to difficulties in sorting out travel documentation in time so turned his attention to the New Guinea Island Championships in Kavieng and the Nationals in Kokopo.
