Mechanisms needed to address abuse

NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop says there has to be mechanisms in place to ensure the Whistleblower Act is not abused.
Parkop said this when debating its bill which was passed in Parliament yesterday.
He said the new act was welcome as it would address corruption but the Government should also look at fixing existing authorities to address corruption issues.
“We have a lot of institutions in place with mechanisms and tools and before we pass any new legislation, we must examine what we have, why aren’t they working well?” Parkop said.
“Why have they failed to curb, reduce or eliminate corruption?
“We have Ombudsman, fraud and public prosecution, auditor-general and a lot of institutions in place, what’s happening to them?
“For this specific act, it is to allow people to make complaints but the problem with this law is that sometimes people don’t rely on facts.
‘They make assumptions that defame especially leaders.
“There must be strong mechanisms that stops people from rushing and be protected by the Whistleblowers Act.”
