THIS year’s Papua New Guinea media pool competition has been cancelled over the Covid-19 pandemic following a meeting in Port Moresby recently, according to an official.
Competition chairman Kepson Pundu said his executive committee had to comply with the outcome of the meeting which voted unanimously to cancel the season.
“Team captains, executives and sponsors voted 17-0 to cancel the season after taking all issues and challenges into consideration so it was not a decision that was taken lightly,” he said.
Pundu said like all other sports, the pandemic had greatly affected the competition in terms of securing sponsorship. He said the season normally started around April every year but due to the pandemic, the competition was almost five months behind schedule.
“I can assure our fans, players, sponsors and supporters that the competition will be bigger and better next year,” Pundu said.
He encouraged representatives of all 20 teams to attend the annual general meeting for the election of new executives, presentation of last year’s financial report and the endorsement of the competition’s constitution.
Once elected on Aug 1, the new executives will manage the transition period between then and April next year.
