Media told of role in sustainable awareness

THE media should be creative in the way it disseminates environmental awareness information for the public, Sea Web PNG programme manager Anaseini Vesikula says.
“Media personnel should be smart and persuasive to strengthen the information for the public,” she said.
“The awareness message should be put in a form where the people would like to read, listen and view the message so the awareness information is absorbed.”
Vesikula said the presentation of information by the media would determine the key to promoting interesting issues.
“Environment conservation is important for the people to educate them on the importance of conservation so they start preserving the natural resources,” she said.
“We do not want to find that there are no reefs for the fish to breed when we go back to the village.
“We do not want to find out that we do not have the land for gardening.”
Vesikula said everyone, including journalists, should be involved in awareness programmes conducted by environment and conservation organisations.
She said media had to help the organisations to bring the awareness message to the people.
