THE media plays an important role in disseminating information to the people, Media Council of Papua New Guinea president Joe Kanekane said.
Kanekane was speaking to more than 25 journalists and corporate representatives during the Forest Anti-Corruption Solution and Advocacy media workshop conducted by Transparency International PNG at Loloata island outside Port Moresby.
“Reporting on environmental issues such as logging needs to be researched and the concerned people must be fed with the correct information,” he said.
“It is a technical area that makes it different from other areas and it has to be reported correctly so that the people are not misled.”
Kanekane said the livelihood of people was at stake on issues surrounding logging and journalists needed to be conscious of that when reporting.
He said five years ago, almost all institutions and the people were talking about issues such as climate change but that had changed.
He said people were now focusing on issues such as the liquefied natural gas project.
He urged journalists not to give up reporting on issues of importance to the country and people.
