Medical school

Letters

THE publicity by the University of Goroka to introduce a school of medicine should be treated with utmost caution, if not laughter.
Medical Schools are only run by universities with integrity and credibility.
It is a sad fact that UOG as it is a glorified teachers college.
UOG does not have the minimum accreditation pre-requisite.
This is compounded by the weakness in administration where the PVC academic and PVC administration are inexperienced and unqualified.
Universities with Medical Schools are managed by reputable academics that have PhDs, several years of lecturing experience, published in peer-reviewed journals, attained membership of professional institutes and have become professors on merit before delving into administration.
The ineptitude and incompetence at UoG is alarming.
For instance, the registration for 2019 was a shambles and it was extended for several weeks into the teaching term.
Students were lining up in the library for the registration instead of attending lectures. This typically results in compression at the end of semesters – generating student dropouts.
The person entrusted to oversee the registration has not been reprimanded. It is normal to sweep things under the carpet at UoG. Quality and standards are missing.
UoG has not got her house in order. So, how then can she introduce a medical school?
Education minister Nick Kuman, make sure that UoG improves on quality, standards, accreditation, etc before the introduction of a medical school is contemplated.
Momentarily, UoG is not a fit-and-proper institution to be offering medical degrees.
It will be a mockery if UOG gets away with it.
