MEDICAL workers in Papua New Guinea have welcomed a government move to crack down on smoking.
A ban on smoking in public places and a move to stop the sale of the popular five-pack are just some proposals to reduce smoking over the next few months.
A concerned Health and HIV/AIDS Minister Jamie Maxtone-Graham said smoking placed a huge financial burden on the country’s already struggling public health system.
Ellie Winge, from Port Moresby General Hospital, said the situation would only get worse as the population grew.
“What will happen to us in 20 years time – or in 15 years time?” She asked.
“(The) health department and minister for health, they have to do something that has to be some sort of control in the country.” –
