MEMORIAL service for 10 Harmony Gold mine workers who died while working at the company’s underground mines at Doornkop, Joel and Kusasalethu mines, South Africa, will be held at Doornkop today.

Harmony is one of the world’s leading gold mining companies and has operations in South Africa and Papua New Guinea.

The miner produced 1.14 million ounces of gold in financial year 2013.

Chief executive Graham Briggs said this had been a tragic week for Harmony, according to company’s website.

“We have lost 10 of our colleagues in three separate and extraordinary accidents at our Doornkop, Joel and Kusasalethu mines. This is unacceptable”.

“But there have been small miracles too, and I ask that we do not lose sight of this.

“On Wednesday, eight miners were rescued and brought to surface at Doornkop gold mine – all unharmed,” Briggs said..
