THE New Britain Shipping Ltd and Joint Venture Stevedoring organised a memorial service at Kimbe port for its employees and ports stakeholders for victims of the mv Rabaul Queen tragedy.
The one-hour devotional service was held from 9.30am last Friday at the mess facility at Kimbe Port. It was attended by PNG Ports Corporation staff, shipping stakeholders, port users and a few of the family members of those listed as missing and survivors.
The devotion service was conducted by Pastor John Apelis of the Kimbe United church.
Prayers were shared for those who had lost their lives and a thanksgiving prayer offered for those who survived the sinking of the inter-island ferry.
The proceedings ended with the congregation walking to the ports coastal passenger terminal where they laid flowers and wreaths in the berthing area where the mv Rabaul Queen had left on its final voyage.
The flowers were later placed into a large carton and handed to Capt Sod Bain of the mv Niu Ailan Coast, which was leaving for Lae on the same day. The flowers were to be scattered by crew members where the mv Rabaul Queen went down on Feb 2.
The mv Niu Ailan Coast was to have stopped at the scene for a minute’s silence before continuing on its way to Lae.
