PEOPLE in Bogia and Ramu have been warned to stay away from highlanders entering their villages to trade marijuana for betel nuts and dry coconuts.

The warning came after policemen at Talidigin in North Coast outside Madang confiscated 20kg marijuana hidden among cabbages last week at a roadblock.

Talidig rural police station commander Snr Const Francis Willinga said marijuana leaves were wrapped in plastic bags, taped and hidden among the cabbages.

Police officer Jason Bogg said the cabbages and  drugs were packed in a stockfeed bag at the back of a 25-seater bus travelling to Bogia.

Willinga said the two men questioned said they wanted to exchange the drugs for betel nut and dry coconuts in Bogia.

“They would have raised K10,000 to K15,000 if they sold the marijuana,” he said.

Willinga said a 40-year-old man from Dei in Mt Hagen and a 35-year-old from Yuwai in Chimbu were charged with being in possession of marijuana and were locked up in Jomba.
