TWO men are believed to have drowned after the dinghy they were travelling in capsized off Kranget Island last weekend.
Crime investigation division officer-in-charge Stephen Yalamu said the two men had been among staff members attending their company’s Christmas party on Kranget Island.
He said after the party, the dinghy left Kranget Island bound for mainland Madang when it capsized between 5pm and 6pm.
Yalamu could not confirm how far off the Madang coast the  incident had occurred.
“The two men, one from Chimbu and the other, an Eastern Highlander, died soon after. Their bodies are still kept at the mortuary and files have been produced to the coroner,” he said.
Meanwhile, Yalamu said police successfully recovered a blue Toyota 10-seater vehicle last Friday night.
“Police intercepted the vehicle after receiving information that a stolen vehicle fitting the description passed the 4-Mile road,” he said.
Yalamu said the vehicle was parked at the Jomba police station and the four suspects were in custody.
He said the township had a quiet Christmas.
“No major incidents have been reported but police are continuing the festive operations until the New Year,” he said.
Attempts to get comments from the provincial police commanders were unsuccessful yesterday.
