THREE grown-ups in their fathers’ police uniforms set up an illegal roadblock on Monday and demanded money from motorists.

Chimbu police commander Supt Albert Beli said they were sons of policemen from Kundiawa.

Beli did not name the three men but told The National that they stole their fathers’ uniforms and set up the roadblock at the Wara-Ega Police Barracks section of the Highlands Highway between 3am  and 5am on Monday.

“They held up traffic flow, including the Tulait-Tulait PMV buses carrying betel nuts and demanded money and goods from them,” Beli said.

“Fortunately, the shift duty policeman on routine police rounds spotted them and reported the matter.”

Beli said they were sons of “very senior non-commissioned officers (NCOs) working in Simbu and living at Wara-Ega Police Barracks”.

He said the impersonators were known and would be arrested and charged.

“I urge the travelling public who fell victims during this illegal roadblock to come and formally register complaints with the Police Internal Investigation Unit so these men can be properly prosecuted.

“Such actions are uncalled for and I warn police parents and families with grown up children who are married and bringing their own children and grandchildren will be forced to return to their respective villages,” Beli said.
