THE Mendi Soccer Association started its pre-season last weekend, with nine teams competing in the challenge.
Association president Francis Ank said the season would start next month when the Kumul Petroleum National Soccer league (NSL) Highlands Conference wraps up its matches.
“We want to continue hosting the competitions to keep ourselves busy and keep players’ spirits up,” Ank said.
“Some of our players recruited by NSL clubs will come back and join their teams when they finish.”
Ank, also an NSL match commissioner, said the conference would resume this weekend after a two-week recess.
“The round-two matches will be played over five weekends,” Ank said.
“As Mendi is known for law-and-order issues, keeping unemployed youths busy through sports is important.
“Men and women will play in the competition.”
Meanwhile, Ank has sent his condolences to the friends and family of Lahi Football Association president Geob Gariki, who passed away last week.
“As a colleague and friend, I would like to send my condolences to the players and supporters of the Lahi Football Association,” Ank said.
