Mendi set to cause stir at national 7s tourney

 ONE team that is determined to make its presence felt at the National Provincial Sevens championship next weekend is Mendi.

The Southern Highlands team will be taking part in the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football Union-sanctioned event scheduled for March 14-16 at the Monier Rugby Park in Port Moresby.

The women’s NPC sevens championship was held over the weekend with Spartans edging Southern Chiefs 15-10 in the cup final.

Mendi’s chances of producing the goods have been boosted with the backing of Mineral Resources Development Company (MRDC).

The company is supporting the Highlands rugby union development programme and the province is a benefactor who set to contest the exciting weekend of sevens.

The company has paid for the side’s travel expenses and the commitment was a morale booster.

The team will be led by national representative Wesley Vali who was part of the Papua New Guinea team to the Oceania Sevens Championships in Fiji last year. The speedy winger will be feature alongside raw talent in the likes of Kone Dus, Michael Konnie, Gibson Solu, Myron Saghou, Ade Kemrabi, Skallar Bimbo, Rodney Luke, Junior Jalina, Michael Saghou, Murphy Tani and Junior Wepi.

The team is expected to arrive in the nation’s capital on March 12.
