PAPUA New Guinea national rugby 7s side, the MRDC Menjals, made it through to the Cup quarter-finals before going down to the Fiji side, Uprising, 31-5 in the Gold Coast International 7s at the weekend.
The Menjals were relegated to the playoff in the Plate and went down fighting 26-19 to an Australian Legends side.
Despite the loss, the team’s performance at the tournament was part of their preparations for the Tahiti 7s event. It has also set a strong foundation for the team’s current form under the coach and Fijian 7s legend Waisale Serevi.
In the pool competition, the Menjals registered two wins and a loss.
In their opening match on Saturday, Menjals defeated local side, Gold Coast Breakers 31-19 and Brisbane-based Nadi 26-19. In their last match, they went down fighting to the South Seas Drifters of Fiji with a close 24-21 score line.
After the two wins, the Menjals went into the Cup quarter-finals but were relegated to the Plate playoff after losing to Uprising 31-5.
The Menjals will return tomorrow to prepare for their travel to the Tahiti Sevens tournament.
The side will leave for Papa’ete on Thursday, aiming to finish in the top two.
